We started a 6 month trip, only booked the first week. Then we had to spend a lot of time deciding what to do in cities, how much time to spend there, book accomodations, buses, airplanes, etc.
To make it efficient, you need to be aware what places you want to visit in a town, and what activities you want to do, how much time they take and how to get there. You might ask locals, and reschedule. But if, as in our case, you are bound to 6 month, you have to skip something in order to add something new.
To make it budget, e.g.: you have to book plane tickets in advance, or track prices, and buy at the right time. Book tours in local agencies, because tours booked online tend to be more expensive.
But to be able to flexible to add local tips for new destinations, you must not be fully booked, or have more expensive flex tickets. But then screw money saving...
Could be a burden, I tell you, but man, how many amazing things you will be able to visit or do like this is pretty worth it!
