Ad hominem could be one logical fallacy that leads to such an outcome.
Regarding attacking people who rightly point out one's ignorance, agreed.
Such cases are often difficult to "prosecute" to borrow courtroom parlance. Typically the ignorant individual hides behind a false shield of invincibility that their ignorance affords them. As long as they remain steadfast in their ignorance, they will never know the evidence that refutes their preconceived notions. It's a very basic ego defense strategy meant to dodge cognitive dissonance.
