It depends on how you're patching it. Patching the operating system's source code is like asking for a new hamburger when the cook spits in it and going into the kitchen to make sure they do it right. Patching the operating system with shell scripts is like scraping the spit off the patty and eating it like that.
To be honest though, I'm mostly just being humorous. I do believe there's either a problem with the OS, or with what you are trying to use it for if you have to resort to shell scripts, but I don't actually think it's a huge deal. I've used shell scripts before myself and I've never personally compiled an operating system. Unfortunately right now I have a bunch of things higher on my list than setting up a proper operating system.
