I'm really just being contrarian here, but anyway your claim that "You want a publication format that warps itself to the current knowledge and mindset of the reader" neglects the the ways in which the current knowledge and mindset of the reader are shaped by the medium itself. An infinitely adaptive medium results in a flabby mind that never is exercised to adapt itself to any "other". Books require attention and discipline, which reinforce focus and comprehension. Digital media are useful too (obviously), but books aren't going away for people interested in serious study.
