Knowledge… at 55, I wanted hives that I could still work when I am 70… so no American style hives for me.
I don’t want to have to lift 70 lb supers, when with Layens gives I can just open the lids and lift one frame that maxes out at about 8-9 pounds. Also, no treatments or sugar water ever, catching local swarms, etc.
Start by visiting horizontalhive.com for free plans to build hives, and read two books:Keeping Bees With a Smile, first, and then Keeping Bees in Horizontal Hives. Dr Leo translated both boos into English, and they are the best place to start.
I sold my honey this first year for 3-4 times what anyone else near me did, because it is all natural and from treatment free hives. This next year I am hoping to be able to harvest bee bread and propolis also, maybe some queen cells to sell too! :)
