It's an intimate, communal bonding experience. It's why eating a meal with your family regularly is so important. Families that enforce this practice on a regular basis maintain a stronger familial bond, and keep the family a more cohesive unit than families that don't. I'm grateful that my mom ruled with an iron fist, and demanded that we eat together as often as possible, at a minimum of twice a week. It was especially important during the teenage years when the desire to detach and isolate are strongest.
