(Please take note that I live in Israel and have for 9 years - I'm not just a concern troll.)
Hi Aram,
"Destroy Israel" is very violent language,* so I can understand why it sounds like a non-starter for you (and others). But Zionism, at least in practice (I say this as a resident of Israel for 9 years), is the belief that there should be a country that legally privileges one ethnic group over others (at best), and participates in ideologically justified ethnic cleansing.
I believe this land should be a nation for all of its residents to share equal rights. That isn't just de facto false, it goes against the traditional and now mainstream conception of Zionism in this country.
I don't always love SJP's messaging and language, and in fact in some cases outright condemn it. But I think this is - perhaps not intentionally - convenient hairsplitting about whether Zionism is a form of racism, while real human beings are being bombed and pushed off of their lands.
*"Smash" is also violent language, to be sure. But Israel is a physical space, whereas Zionism is an ideological idea. (Compare "Smash Zionism" with "Smash Zionists")
And I just want to further add that yes, sometimes "Zionism" is a shorthand way for people to talk about Jews and smuggle in antisemitism. It very well could be that that's what's going on here, but I don't see the evidence for it given this flyer.
