My niece handled my mom's finances until mom died a couple years ago. I should ask her if SSA stopped the payments right away or not.
I KNOW the SSA will claw back the $$ if you are somehow overpaid & they figure it out. I had that happen to me in the 1970s when I started making too much income to qualify for survivor benefits after my dad died. Took me months to pay it back.
