In Poland, they’ve mysteriously chosen to celebrate on the preceding Thursday by eating Pączki (filled donuts/Berliners). The one pictured is an excellent example at our favorite hipster bakery in Gdynia.
Of course, I learnt this difference by having a back-and-forth with my girlfriend where we couldn’t figure out if we were having a vocabulary problem or a semantic one:
“Fat Thursday!”
“You mean Fat Tuesday?”
“No, Thursday!”
