It wasn't that much different then. Americans were set against the English foreign enemy to distract them away from the more immediate enemy: a wealthy and corrupt elite class that was taxing and enslaving them. Rebellions still ensued after liberation and those were permanently put down with the establishment of the Constitution that originally had no bill of rights. States had bills of rights and it took a year to get a Bill of Rights included to appease them. This was America's version of the 18th century invention of the nation state mind virus that is now universal.
