Over his career, Williams participated in two space shuttle missions aboard the Space Shuttle's Columbia and Endeavour and performed three spacewalks.
As a qualified doctor, he carried out research on the effects of space travel on the nervous system, how long astronauts could stay in space safely and methods of delivering medical care in remote locations.

During his missions, Williams displayed the pride he has in his Welsh heritage by taking a Welsh flag and Gareth Edwards' rugby cap with him, as well as speaking Welsh in Space in tribute to his late father.
