There are two types of circumcision, & it's important to clarify what type is being referred to whenever having a discussion on the topic. There is Biblical/traditional ("milah" in Hebrew) and modern ("priah" in Hebrew).
Biblical circumcision involves only removing the foreskin by the truest definition of foreskin: the skin that goes before, or past, the glans/head. It was done with a flint knife in at least one Bible passage. I used to wonder why God would have the Jews perform such an invasive operation using just a flint knife before people had modern cleanliness practices. But now that I know that it was a very minimal operation, it makes sense. It's actually so minimal that it can even be safely undone without surgery.
Then there's modern circumcision. This involves removing the entire foreskin (including the part that doesn't even go past the head), the foreskin's inner membrane, & the frenulum. Even today, this has a high risk of infection & nerve damage plus guaranteed side effects mainly experienced during sex. The foreskin & frenulum are created in part to reduce uncomfortable friction, increase pleasure, & reduce or eliminate the need for lubricants for the man & the woman during sex.
Although the Bible never defines what circumcision is beyond saying that the foreskin (which it also doesn't define) is removed during the process, we know from history that Biblical circumcision was performed by Jews until about the 2nd century. Around that time, some Jews would regenerate their foreskins by stretching them over time so that they appeared uncircumcised. This was mainly done to avoid persecution & to be allowed to participate in sports in Greek gymnasiums. Only men were present there, & everyone participating in sports did so while naked. In response, rabbis invented modern/priah circumcision so that it would be nearly impossible for anyone to undo their circumcision.
It's important to also address why the medical industrial complex is so interested in promoting modern circumcision. Money. It's not like every doctor knows they're doing baby boys a disservice by having them undergo modern circumcision, but there's a financial incentive for the system to encourage parents to have their baby undergo the procedure. Foreskins are used to make skin grafts for medical procedures, insulin for diabetics, & skin care products due to the regenerative properties of the fibroblasts that baby foreskins are high in. The system tells parents that they need to cut off parts of their baby's penis because it's supposedly healthier since it makes it easier to clean. Water & soap are the simple solution to hygiene, of course. Then they get the parents to pay for that unneeded and risky operation, sell the foreskin for a profit, & don't bother to tell the parents about how they benefit from literally harvesting part of their child's body for profit.
Although foreskins can be regenerated even after a modern circumcision with surgery or sometimes with special manual devices over a number of years, surgery is risky. Also, surgery & manual devices can never regenerate the frenulum or inner foreskin membrane despite being able to make the foreskin cover the head again.
