Comet Siding Spring appears near Messier 6, but is actually 2,000 light-years away. On Oct 19th, it'll pass Mars at just 139,500 km—closer than any comet to Earth. Spacecraft and rovers on Mars will observe the encounter and potential atmospheric interactions.
