Listening to this now and it's a good episode so far! Live free or die! Is New Hampshire actually the freest state with the most liberty-loving Americans? They have the most guns per capita, and may be the most polite as well.
I could maybe get with the idea of keeping the US federal government (versus scrapping it all together) if it only consisted of the military, and it's sole job would be defense, as Eric Forte states. No offensive wars, no entangling alliances, nor going off to fight monsters abroad, or "making the world safe for democracy," or "nation-building." No black-ops or interfering with other nations who have not attacked US. The 50 states would handle all other internal matters. At the Federal level, you would basically have a night watchman state. I don't know that a president would even be necessary, though certainly the military would have a commander-in-chief, who may not necessarily be a civilian. I could see this appearing to be a military dictatorship, but if the military had no authority internally, unless it was necessary to quell domestic insurrections, then perhaps it might not be so bad.
If the federal government collapsed I've always wondered about what happens with the nukes, so perhaps keeping at least the military for national defense might be tolerable. The federal government would basically just be a military alliance of the 50 states.
