No one who has done any real research on it thinks it’s anything but an American invention. What I think is really fascinating though is how widely this phenomenon applies outside of Italian cuisine. It kind of points back to how American really is a country of immigrants, and in a lot of ways, surprisingly happy to disclaim credit for cultural innovations back to the relevant old country.
