The way to do politics is not to associate yourself with any one individual but to support a specific action only. A politician will always let you down in some way. Tying your identity to them only makes you defend the worst of their actions for the sake of appearing consistent - it’s a human bias and politicians count on it.
Instead of saying I support Trump, you could say I support Trump’s action of releasing Ross.
Become politically neutral and don’t tie any part of yourself to them. This will keep your thinking objective and more rational. You can then condemn any action that goes against your values should you choose to.
One can be for and against the same person, the same country or any other person and country without contradicting themselves.
