ultimately they are related, the event messages you have designed have a lot in common with a commit, just not as open-ended in structure... i think this is probably a more important protocol to build than simply make a relay into a git commit store
and there's a lot of stuff to sort out regarding things like spiders and broadcasting, the actual decentralizing part is exactly about achieving a reasonable rate of convergence of replicas
and i think also by pushing this over to the client side a bit we get to make the decentralization heterogeneous as well, i mean, where authors can define their multicast group is, though anyone can then bounce that wherever, as their business requirements specify
