Hieromartyr Irineu, Bishop of Sirmium, staunchly refused to offer pagan sacrifice during Emperor Maximian's persecution. For this, he was beaten and imprisoned, yet remained steadfast in his faith. Brought before the emperor, Irineu was threatened with death but would not yield. As he was being led to his execution by beheading near the Sava River in 304 AD, he prayed for the Church and those who would believe.
