Hated the one about toss in some asks at the end. Brutal. Leaves bad taste in people's mouth. I have never ending sales cycles so it isn't good for business. So I don't bring it into personal interactions either. Hate when it is done to me. Empathic sales and I think purchasing is important and powerful.
This one I live by, acting first and coming in high. Sets the bar. You get more of an honest "what they can live with." The other party leaves happy (usually) when you make concessions and you will end in a better place for yourself pricewise and relationship wise. You can come down on price to meet a little closer to the middle and see if tossing in added concessions that don't cost you a lot sweetens the deal for the other side. Free shipping, free warranty coverage extension, whatever you have seen that can be important to some customers in yiur industry. It gets convo started so you can meet additional needs and improve overall satisfaction in the transaction.
