Ground fault is when electricity that came out of the wall goes somewhere other than going back in to the wall. GFCI protects against that. Arc fault is when there is arcing, whether between conductors or over poor connections. This damage is overheat due to arcing. AFCI would protect against this. If a real electrician corrects me in the replies, go with what they said.
