One solution to this is temporary paywalling. If I remember rightly, the first place I saw this was on the website version of the Listener magazine. There were plenty of articles freely available, but all from back issues. To see anything from the issue currently on sale, you had to be a paying subscriber, and fair enough.
Another version of this is Cory Doctorow's audio books, which he releases himself, DRM-free, under a CC license. But first he crowdfunds a reimbursement for the costs.
