He discusses this in his book, which I highly recommend.
Part of his philosophy, paraphrased, was that it's the contender’s job to beat the champion decisively. The champion shouldn’t be the one taking unnecessary risks to finish the opponent.
He was definitely more aggressive before becoming champion at 170 lbs, consistently finishing opponents on his way up. Even when he moved up to 185 lbs, he finished the fight as the contender and became middleweight champion.
Any time I see him going on a long form podcast, I tuned in to listen. He's such an awesome martial artist.
