Understood. To be frank, it doesn't make much difference, though. You'll encounter far fewer issues setting up something like WireGuard and your preferred software (e.g., NextCloud) on a Linux box than dealing with the insecure BusyBox deployments from Synology or QNAP. QNAP, in particular, when exposed to the web, is practically an invitation for attackers to exploit its software and hold your files hostage with ransomware. It's much harder to secure their software than to start from scratch. You might consider something like TrueNAS Core to get a head start. Otherwise, good old Fedora or Debian will suffice.
