Buttery Garlic Naan 🫓
Any pleps are craving for some butter chicken? 🙋🏽♀️ And what’s butter chicken without some soft, chewy, garlicky naan? Let’s make these bad boys from scratch!
• 1/2 cup warm water
• 2 teaspoons yeast
• 1 teaspoon sugar or honey (to activate the yeast)
• 3 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil
• 1/4 cup plain yogurt
• 1 large egg
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup bread flour
• Melted butter, minced garlic, finely chopped coriander for brushing
Let’s Get Cooking!
1. Mix warm water and sugar/honey, then stir in the yeast. Let it sit until it starts bubbling—yeast party in progress!
2. Once the yeast is ready, add in the oil, yogurt, and egg. Stir well.
3. In a large bowl, combine the flours and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead until a soft dough forms. It’ll be a bit sticky—resist the urge to add more flour! Over-kneading = rubbery naan.
4. Transfer the dough to an oiled bowl, cover it up, and let it double in size (about an hour).
5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal balls. Let them rest for another 20 minutes while you prep the garlic butter.
6. Heat a pan or skillet—hot, but not crazy hot. Roll out each dough ball to about 1/2 inch thick (oval or circle). A lightly floured surface is your best friend here—too much flour makes dry naan.
7. Cook each naan for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown. Brush with that glorious garlic butter mixture while they’re hot.
Enjoy!
Best served fresh, but if prepping ahead, let them cool, store in an airtight container, and microwave (covered) for 10-30 seconds before serving.
Enjoy with butter chicken, curry, or just on its own. Because let’s be honest—garlic naan is always a good idea.
