The confusion is fueled by not understanding what Christ as the middle way makes out of the two extremes: Materialism and Spirituality. L is spiritually for the sake of bypassing the human condition at the present time. It's the temptations that you can transcend before you are ready and have learned your lesson given to you in the here and now. As you're walking the middle way you get to be tempted by both extremes: material possessions on one side and fake light on the other.
