“Engineering” - Authors know how it works
We currently know how everything works, and generalisations are required for smart people to create products that are useful for a large amount of users.
“Vibe coding” - Authors know that it works We are currently in this stage, where entrepreneurs, students and Bob at the Pub can ask language models to output millions of lines of code, change the behaviour and make it execute. The vibe coders do not know how their released code works, and are unable to maintain it.
“Agentic workforces” - Authors know the idea works
Maintenance was missing from the Vibe Code stage, and it’s coming next. Agents can be spun up to manage deployments, scale infrastructure up and down, monitor for patterns of bad behaviour on the systems and suggest improvements to protect against them. Agents can read these improvements and apply them.
“Personal apps” - Nobody knows how anything works
Now, nobody seems to know how anything works, but it works very well because it is easy to set up, and many companies create full systems in days that are self managing. Generalised software like global CRM systems or invoice management is becoming less and less prevalent, since so many companies make competing products that tweak the experience in a certain way that makes it tick for some cohort of users. After a while it becomes so easy that everybody creates their own personal apps, configurable through chat interfaces, tailored to know everything about their master.
