We don't want GrapheneOS devices broadcasting that they're GrapheneOS devices or using a high attack surface protocol for this exposed to arbitrary peers. For similar reasons, we don't use mirrors hosted by arbitrary people like many traditional Linux distributions not focused on privacy and security.
Update signatures are verified with downgrade protection at 3 layers but attack surface and privacy of the client is still relevant.
