So much of the writing around is issue is incredibly disingenuous. First, the US doesn’t actually have higher drug prices than the rest of the world. It’s partially true that branded drugs are more expensive but they are the vast minority of drugs. 91% of the drugs that Americans purchase are generics and we actually pay less for them than the average [0].
Secondly, Americans are stupidly rich and are able to pay for the most expensive drugs available [1]. Insulin is a perfect example of this. Instead of buying cheap $25 vial of insulin [2] we opt for maximum convenience and get the most expensive fastest acting insulin available. We spend a lot of money on drugs because we have a lot of money.
Despite what the leftist socialists who are slavering over Luigi Mangione say, America has on the whole an incredibly effective healthcare system staffed by competent doctors prescribing normally priced drugs. Despite the fact that a large proportion of Americans are either eating themselves to death, outright killing themselves, or killing other people, our healthcare system has kept life expectancy quite high [3].
America is awesome and we should appreciate that.
