⚡️🚨 ALERT - The UN’s World Food Programme says Palestinians in #Gaza are now traveling an average of 15 miles to reach overwhelmed bakeries, often leaving empty-handed. Only a few bakeries have resumed operations after Israel allowed a limited number of aid trucks into the Strip (more on that shortly).
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the aid “only a teaspoon when there is a flood of need,” as the latest IPC report confirmed a quarter of Gaza’s population is facing famine.
🇺🇳 Yesterday, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke on the aid situation in Gaza. In his remarks he outlined the challenges the UN faces in collecting aid and distributing it to the people.
So, just because you hear or read that aid is flowing into Gaza, that doesn't necessarily reflect what's happening on the ground in real time.
Below are some of the challenges - mentioned by the Secretary-General:
🔴 In recent days, almost 400 trucks were cleared for entry to Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing.
🔴 Supplies from only 115 trucks have been able to be collected.
🔴 Nothing has reached the besieged north.
🔴 We managed to distribute some wheat flour, baby food, nutrition supplements and medicines.
🔴 Strict quotas are being imposed on the goods we distribute – along with unnecessary delay procedures.
🔴 Fuel, shelter, cooking gas, and water purification supplies – are prohibited.
🔴 Staff is prevented from distributing food parcels and wheat flower directly to people in desperate need.
🔴 The Israeli military offensive is intensifying with atrocious levels of death and destruction.
🔴 80 per cent of Gaza has been either designated an Israeli-militarized zone or an area where people have been ordered to leave.
🔴 Four-fifths of the territory of Gaza is a no-go zone for the people of Gaza.
