How coincidental that the most beautiful sunrise I’ve ever witnessed happened on the same day God started calling my grandmother home.
Of all the grandchildren, I probably spent the most time with her. She taught me to garden, to cook, to play a mean game of Scrabble. I’ll never forget when she downloaded Words With Friends on her iPad and played a 99-pointer on me and sent a single chat message that just said “Waha” 🤣 Now you know who raised me to be a menace.
As kids we spent every Friday night at her house having dinner with my aunts and uncles, watching the Dinosaurs show and catching fireflies. When my daughter was born we would sit on her porch and rock for hours, just chatting, playing Phase 10, and looking through old photo albums.
I remember how much she loved to read - especially Tom Clancy - and how she would do the crossword, jumble, and cipher in the local paper every day. I remember how she wrote letters to inmates at the jail encouraging them to take a second chance at a fresh start. She was genuinely one of the best people I’ve ever known.
As we gathered around her bedside tonight for the last time, I found I had the least to say. After all, what was left unsaid? Not much. Instead, we played her favorite song and took turns making jokes so that we could see her laugh just one more time. As she started drifting out, I kissed her forehead and told her, “See you on the flip side. Love you.”
I’m forever grateful to have her as my Mamaw, and I will carry her in my heart always.
