In 2024, U.S. data centers used about 200 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity—equal to Thailand’s annual consumption.
AI-specific servers consumed 53–76 TWh, potentially enough for 4,000 chatbot messages per person on Earth. Most of this demand came from startups, tech giants, and intensive tasks like video generation.
By 2028, AI’s electricity use could surge to 165–326 TWh annually—more than all current U.S. data center usage—producing emissions equivalent to 300 billion miles of driving.
Companies like OpenAI and SoftBank plan to invest ~$500 billion in new U.S. data centers, while pushing for massive energy expansions and international buildouts, including in Malaysia.
