The Indian film industry is a rich tapestry, encompassing a multitude of languages and cultures like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Bengali.
Yet, it's clear that upper-caste predominance, especially from Brahmins and other forward castes, has historically shaped the landscape in several key areas:
• The realms of scriptwriting and directing remain tightly knit, often requiring formal training that can close off access.
• Cultural narratives favor mythological themes, religious epics, and nationalist scripts.
• The arena of film criticism and media coverage frequently sees gatekeepers with similar class and caste backgrounds.
It’s crucial to highlight, however, that:
• There is a vibrant community of Dalit, OBC, Muslim, and tribal actors and filmmakers, who unfortunately encounter systemic biases and typecasting.
• The underrepresentation in leadership roles within film schools, production companies, and funding avenues is still a pressing concern.
