Soil God
Humus, before the early 1800's, was considered to have mystical or god-like properties. It existed but was an unknowable thing. Then Justus von Liebig stripped soil of its 'diety' status with basic chemistry and humans began 200 years of crop manipulation.
Gardeners 200 years ago knew what gardeners of today are rediscovering: complexity creates resilience. These last 200 years should be considered the agricultural "Dark Ages".
