Right now the unpruned blockchain is ~650GB growing at 50-60GB a year. This is without really any mainstream adoption and hardly anyone using btc for transactions. Encouraging larger blocksize is not a good thing for a problematic scalable experiment like bitcoin. Nodes need to be simple, not 2TB workstations if we want this thing to succeed.
This is an ominous sign of things to come when the bitcoin core devs are selfishly profiting off something thats seems little, but is a step down a very different path in the long run.
