Have you considered that some people lie to get power? Or that other people lie to make things look worse than they are? Venezuela is the current popular "socialism" case study, but none of the most criticized policies are actually socialist. Nationalizing industries is the most commonly cited issue I see, but that places them under ownership of the state, not the workers, for example. Their social welfare programs also come up a lot, but state sponsored welfare has nothing to do with who owns the means of production. Hell, I've seen people try to claim the Nazis were socialist because it's in the party name, National Socialists, but that's just hilariously gullible. That's like trying to say the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is democratic and a republic.
