Canadian former MP Ruby Dhalla, a candidate to replace Justin Trudeau as leader of the country's Liberal Party, has been kicked out of the race by the leadership vote committee due to "extremely serious" rule violations. The nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpq75wjl8q0lv90xducn49ed6ta9nr9umpwh7nkhlej7aw60swllfasyvsd5a reports that violations relating to finance matters and non-disclosure of material facts may have broken the Canada Elections Act. A source told the CBC that Dhalla was accused of failing to disclose the involvement of a non-Canadian citizen in her campaign, which the party alleges would amount to foreign interference if it happened during an election period. Dhalla learned about her disqualification live on television. The remaining candidates for Liberal leadership are MP Frank Baylis, former central banker Mark Carney, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland and former House leader Karina Gould. The winner will lead the party into its general election, which must take place on or before Oct. 20 2025.
