But to really understand the disks, you have to look at the molecules frozen into ice. Ice in space is weird — it takes a fluffy amorphous form, not like the crystalline ice we have on Earth.
We can observe the ices in protoplanetary disks in absorption, if we see them edge-on. The disk is backlit by the star.
