I never saw it until earlier this spring. Honestly I was amazed. I thought it was going to feel slow and have terrible racism etc. But the actors are excellent and expressive in a way you just don't see now in the days of Botox. They explore a slice of life during some of the worst times in American life, and do it in a compelling and emotionally gripping way. They even handled slavery with tact, taking care to show how we didn't really abolish slavery just pivoted to using prisoners for slave labor. It's worth a watch at least once so you get the references elsewhere in pop culture just remember that the main characters are not meant to be seen as heros, just people.
