My 2 acre property is on the west side of a hill in a valley. This limits the amount sunlight I get.
I've mainly focused on the valley part of my land because it's where the moisture is concentrates. The soil there is a sandy loam on a clay base & is pretty fertile. I've removed as many mature eucalyptus as I could from this area.
The soil on the hill is heavy clay and full of bits of basalt (large & small). It's good for nutrients but hard as hell to work with. In the dry season it gets hard & starts to crack. In the wet season it gets sloppy & a bit anaerobic.
I'm still undecided whether I want to be here long term. Part of me imagines what it would be like clearing the hill of rocks & trees. I think it could be quite a productive area. The other part of me wants sell it & buy a large plot of pasture where I can focus on raising ruminants.
