⛏️ We recently had a user encounter an interesting Bitcoin mining scenario.
For the same price as a nostr:nprofile1qyv8wumn8ghj7urjv4kkjatd9ec8y6tdv9kzumn9wsqzpv0prpvgffk3fwluuwyeedf7sxp6mhny9uny6rl57969xu0qvy6vhuwgqp Bitaxe Gamma, he could purchase 5X the hashrate from us, but this Rigly’er found that this didn’t make him 5X more likely to win a block…
The factors that play into this include luck, variance, & difficulty.
Our Rigly’er expected to hit at least over 1T difficulty with that hashrate and believed it would be his best chance to get the highest share, surpassing his Bitaxes. However, in bitcoin mining, nothing is certain. (If it was, everyone would do it).
He was disappointed with the mining difficulty he achieved with Rigly's 2 PH/s for 24 hours, which only reached 30B. (His Bitaxe recently hit 123B). But there was variance with mining’s probabilistic process.
Rigly does offer better odds over time due to a higher hashrate per cost, making this a low-time preference game of chance.
Have you also stacked up a Bitaxe against our hashrate delivery? Did you find a similar or different result?
Are you interested in seeing the math in a detailed blog post from us? 🤔
