How to Deal with Negative People
There’s always someone in every team who says, “It can’t be done.” Whatever idea you bring up, they’ll be the first to shoot it down. Why? Maybe they’ve been wronged in the past—real or imagined. Or maybe they carry personal issues that go beyond the workplace.
What to do? Pause. Observe. Listen. If the issue is rooted in the past, help them move forward. If prejudice is involved, clarify it. But if their negativity stems from deeper issues, don’t hesitate to bring in a professional.
The key: turn negativity into collaboration. Acknowledge their objections and involve them in the solution. Make them part of the progress.
Watch out for two main risks:
- Resistance to change: Positive people can be swayed with logic. Negative ones resist just to say, “I told you so.”
- Impact on morale: Negativity spreads fast. One sour attitude can lower the energy of the whole team.
Final advice? Let them speak, show appreciation, then lead firmly. Turn resistance into contribution.
