Super Mario wasn’t always called Mario. In his 1981 debut in Donkey Kong, the now-iconic plumber was simply referred to as “Jumpman.” When Nintendo localized the game for the U.S. market, they decided to give the character a more relatable name and that’s where Mario Segale came in.
Segale was a real estate developer in Washington who rented warehouse space to Nintendo. One version of the story claims that after a dispute over unpaid rent, Segale gave Nintendo more time, and the company named the character “Mario” as a gesture of gratitude. Others within Nintendo say the name was just an inside joke based on his appearance and Italian heritage.
Whether it was a tribute or a coincidence, Mario Segale became a quiet part of video game history. Though he rarely spoke about the connection, his name lives on through one of gaming’s most beloved characters.
