So as much as Hitler eased on the push, during the Dunkirk escape, the French resistance along with the commonwealth soldiers put up a tough fight, street by street to slow down the German push.
We knew for example, the Germans knew exactly where the retreat was happening (they flew planes over Dunkirk beachhead) so they knew they pushed the Brits to the edge, but I doubt Hitler saw Churchill as an ally, more of a man who could be bombed into submission.
