The whole thing regarding REAL ID is that it is yet another way to try to get you to contract into the District of Columbia. It's the same scheme that D.C has been doing for centuries now with every identification document. REAL ID applies to corporate franchises AKA the ALL CAPS name.
Really goes hand in hand when you consider that the U.S.D.C beast that runs the show always speaks commerce terms in communication. For instance, the term "port" is a commerce term, and means an area where ships can dock, which has been appropriated to mean any area of entry, such as "port of entry" at the borders with Canada and Mexico. Once you realize what words, terms, and phrases mean, you can no longer fall for its tyranny.
This brings me to the "passport" which is yet another commerce term. The documents that are actually needed for travel are travel papers because passport comes from "passe-port" which just means a document merchants needed to trade.[1]
The closest non-commerce alternative to a passport that I could find is the USCIS Form I-131.[2]
