when the earth is at a relative position where the other planet's motion appears to stop or go backwards, at the edge of its orbit relative to us, the shape is in fact often a loop-de-loop sorta shape, the planet is said to be in retrograde (backwards)
mercury is the one you hear most about but it happens with almost all planets at some point
in astrology it is said to mean that the powers associated with that planet are working backwards, so communication is turning to confusion, luck is turning to disaster, judgement is turning to pardon, war is turning to peace, love is turning to fear, for all the other 7 planets when they do this
mercury does it the most often because it's got the shortest orbital period, most years it does it once or twice
