As the Musk-Trump administration embraces gun control I hope at least some liberals will realize that gun control has literally always been an authoritarian venture. The administration is talking about using the civil commitment process as a way to take people's guns without due process: this would mean that red states would be empowered to disarm those they consider mentally ill and/or sexually deviant. Put that in the context of what red states are doing to queer people and the widespread criminalizing and pathologizing of queeress, as an example.
The father of US gun control is Ronald Reagan, and gun control stems from that same ideology of state control and the persecution of the marginalized. The push by Yankee liberals for gun control has always been a project of technocratic authoritarianism that was in turn always going to be helpful for Republican fascism. The Democrats alienated a huge voter base forever in order to make sure they could screw over more minorities over guns.
