I visited 2 farms with my daughter yesterday, 1 for meat, 1 for milk.
At meat farm; Nobody there. Called the farmer: "I should be there in 10 minutes, just hang out wherever you like for a bit." So my daughter played with the cat and pet some of the young cows for a bit. Another call: "It's gonna be a while, just take from the freezer whatver you need." 👍
Milk farm: More cats, more playing.
They're actuall both dairy farms but the meat guy has a small ox meat side business where he keeps a few oxes grazing on pastures that are just enough for a single cow and that are not around milking equipment. He does not do sell milk directly to consumers and during the winter the cows get some extra corn. It's why i go to a separate farm for milk, where, even in winter, the cows still only eat grass.
I too like to have some small talk to let them know i support very much what they're doing and am very grateful they want to share it with me.
