⚡️👏 NEW - Redis tried to go it alone. Spoiler: the community didn't like it.
So... back to open source.
On May 1, 2025, Redis announced its return to open source by adopting the AGPLv3 license, approved by the Open Source Initiative (OSI), starting with version 8. This decision comes after a period of controversy following the switch to more restrictive licenses in March 2024, which had sparked criticism within the open source community .
The return to an open source license aims to restore trust with the developer community and encourage contributions to the Redis project. This move marks an important milestone in the history of Redis, reaffirming its commitment to open source principles.
But in the end, this story is a brutal reminder: You can't control anything when you link your architecture to proprietary technology.
