This is one of the reasons we didn't do Santa or the tooth fairy. Don't want their earliest memories to be based on a lie. We didn't spoil it and let them believe whatever but if they asked we didn't lie. They knew there wasn't a Santa early on but we explained that other people believed and that was ok and that we don't want to tell them before their parents do. Maybe we are just selfish parents who didn't want to give the big red guy credit for our awesome gifts. We explained saint Nicholas and the story and intent behind it. We also didn't want to over shadow the true intent of Christmas. We also talked about the lies and how could your kids trust you with other things if those two weren't real.
