# Decoding India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’:
The Indian military has dubbed the missile strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir “Operation Sindoor”. That name’s significant.
Sindoor is the Hindi word for vermillion — which married Hindu women often apply to their forehead. The operation’s name appears to be a reference to the manner in which gunmen shot dead 26 people — almost all tourists — in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22.
The attack triggered the spiralling tensions between India and Pakistan that led to Wednesday morning’s strikes.
Multiple survivor accounts have detailed how the gunmen segregated male tourists from the women, and then pointedly identified those who were non-Muslim before shooting them dead — leaving many married Hindu women widowed. With source Aljazeera
